Last year we opened up our doors for Perth’s first Open House weekend and showed curious visitors what it’s like working in Perth’s most sustainable heritage office building. We had a few teething problems along the way with an address misprint, so only those who persevered found our little gem of a building.
This year, even more buildings have joined in the fun with over 60 spreading out from the CBD into Northbridge, Highgate and Mount Lawley, with us as lucky number 32.
So what exactly is Open House Perth?
Open House Perth is your backstage pass to the city!
Founded in London in 1992, Open House is an international event which gives the public free access to a cities’ most amazing buildings in locations such London, New York, Barcelona, Melbourne and now Perth.
Architecture, Interiors, Landscape, Public Art and Urban Design play a significant role in our day to day experience of the city. Open House Perth seeks to enhance this experience through a celebration of the city by unlocking the door to great architecture and design, completely for free.
Open House Perth will introduce a program of destinations, events, talks, competitions and exhibitions that celebrate your city. The 2013 building program includes even more residential, commercial, hospitality, civic and performance spaces ranging from the early 20th century to recently complete projects. Selected projects will promote a better understanding of contemporary, historic and sustainable design within the city showcasing Western Australian projects on a local, national and international stage.
Destination 32 – Pier Street Sustainable Office
Built in 1910, the Milton Chambers was originally a law office for the District Court of Western Australia and 100 years on it houses environmental design and engineering companies Cundall and eTool. In 2011, the previously derelict heritage building was refurbished and transformed into Perth’s most sustainable work space.
Stripped back to reveal its original beauty, the entire upper level has been creatively renovated using only reused and recycled furniture and green certified products. The work spaces have been decorated with wooden door desks, window pane shelves, paint pot planters and quirky in-house designed wall art.
New purchases, including low VOC paint and recycled acoustic wall boards enhance the space whilst reinforcing the environmental consideration of the staff.
Open House Perth recommends a visit to discover the history of this Federation Free Classical style building, and importantly learn more about sustainable design and enjoy the activities designed for Perthites of all ages! Activities include vintage footage of the building and surroundings, the ‘What is Sustainability?’ wall, interactive energy efficiency games and a look behind the scenes of some of Perth’s most exciting sustainable building projects.
Note: Wheelchair/Disabled and pram access to ground level only. There are no lifts in this building.
